The rising cost of car insurance for several years has been painful for my family. Having four vehicles made each increase quite a financial burden. My insurance agent is my brother-in-law. He's an independent agent; he writes policies for several different companies.

With the announcement in the mail about each increase, my wife would open the envelope and stare in disbelief at the new amount. The increase was so significant she was sure there must have been an error in the calculation. She would ask me, "I wonder if they added someone else's cars to our policy! Call our agent and ask him to fix it!"

I would call my brother-in-law agent and he would let me know the high increase was correct. He even offered to "shop around" my policy to see if anyone could give me a better rate. I asked him to do this. And without telling him, I also called other agencies to see if I could get a better rate. After several days of checking, I concluded the rate my agent had given me was the best rate available.

With each premium increase, I realized there was nothing I could do to bring the cost down. This was frustrating since we rarely would use our insurance — usually only roadside assistance.

Last year, we saw a significant increase — I could hardly believe it!
