A Tire Blowout, a Crash, and a Clear Total Loss Process
A Tire Blowout, a Crash, and a Clear Total Loss Process

Member: Johnny D., Florida
Vehicle: 2024 Toyota RAV4
Event Date: September 2025
This case shows how GDC handles a vehicle that cannot reasonably be repaired and how the final numbers are calculated and shared.
The Incident
On a Saturday afternoon, one of Johnny's tires blew out at highway speed. He lost control and crashed. The vehicle sustained heavy front-end damage.
He reported the event through the GDC app within minutes.
By early Monday morning, an Auto Damage Specialist contacted him to review the details and confirm the event met GDC's guidelines. From there, the total loss process began.
Vehicle Pickup and Damage Review
GDC arranged for Copart, a nationwide salvage auction partner, to pick up and store the RAV4.
Copart provided detailed photos so the Auto Damage Specialist could review the extent of the damage.
Inspection findings included:
Major structural damage to the front end
Estimated repair cost: $28,543.84
With repair costs approaching the vehicle's pre-incident value, the Specialist reviewed three key numbers side by side:
Estimated repair cost
Pre-incident vehicle value
Expected salvage value
Based on these figures and Florida requirements, the vehicle was handled as a total loss.
How the Vehicle Value Was Determined
GDC's valuation partner reviewed local market data to determine the vehicle's value immediately before the crash.
Pre-incident value: $31,618.00
Net auction proceeds: $14,117.25
The pre-incident value reflects what a similar 2024 Toyota RAV4 in comparable condition would reasonably sell for in Johnny's local market.
After Copart auctioned the vehicle, the net proceeds were returned to the GDC community. Those funds reduce what members collectively contribute for future events.
In this case, handling the vehicle as a total loss resulted in a lower overall cost to the community than moving forward with repairs.
Documentation
Total loss events require title transfer and supporting documents.
The Auto Damage Specialist guided Johnny through:
Signing and mailing the vehicle title
Providing required documentation
Confirming receipt and processing
The Numbers
Under GDC's model:
$33,732.43 was the final total amount (ACV + taxes + fees)
$1,000.00 was Johnny's Out-Of-Pocket Expense
$298.74 came from his Remaining Pledge Balance
$32,433.69 was shared by the community
All amounts were visible in the GDC app. The event was announced publicly in cycle #202542 so Members could see how the sharing was applied.
Communication and Visibility
Throughout the process, Johnny could:
Track each stage in the app
Message his Auto Damage Specialist directly
Receive updates by text, phone, email, or in-app message
Total loss situations involve more steps than standard repairs. In this case, the timeline, valuation method, auction result, and final math were clearly laid out.
When Johnny purchased a replacement vehicle, he enrolled it in a new GDC plan.
This case illustrates how a severe highway incident moved from report to resolution with documented values, understandable math, and returned auction proceeds that benefit the broader Member community.
