When GDC Applies as Secondary

When GDC Applies as Secondary

GDC is an alternative to collision and comprehensive coverage. It is not insurance.

In certain situations, GDC may apply as secondary.

A quick overview of auto insurance types

Liability insurance pays for damages you cause to others in an accident and is required by law. If you're at fault, you would need to file a claim with your liability insurance provider. GDC applies to your own vehicle.

First-party coverage—including comprehensive, collision, and uninsured/underinsured motorist property damage—covers damage to your own vehicle. This coverage is optional unless you are financing or leasing a vehicle. In that case, your finance or lease agreement may require you to maintain it through your insurance provider.

If you have first-party coverage through your insurance provider

If you're a GDC member with active first-party coverage, GDC acts as secondary for eligible events.

In this situation, you may need to file a claim with your insurance provider before reporting to GDC. In most cases, your insurance carrier will handle the loss and restore your vehicle to a pre-loss condition.

If there is still a financial gap after your insurance claim, GDC will determine what portion of that gap may qualify as an eligible event.

In some situations:

  • If you have a high deductible with your insurance carrier and a lower out-of-pocket with GDC, this may affect how you evaluate your options.

  • If your insurance policy does not include rental coverage, GDC may provide transportation assistance where applicable.

If the other party is at fault

If you have an accident and the other party is at fault, you would need to file a claim with the at-fault party's insurance carrier.

In most cases, the other insurance carrier will handle the loss. If there is still a financial gap for any reason, you can report your loss to GDC, and we will determine what portion may qualify as an eligible event.
